Crossing the 200hp barrier

Donkervoort crossed the 200-horsepower threshold with the D8 Cosworth in 1995, and it instantly made Donkervoort’s cars very serious threats to sportscar hierarchy all over the world.

Work started on the D8 Cosworth just days after the D8 Zetec presentation in 1992, and it’s not hard to see why.

It was a new chassis, which was needed to harness the 158kW of the turbocharged Cosworth twin-cam four-cylinder, and it burst to 100km/h on 4.8 seconds on its way to a 235km/h top speed.

As a street legal sports car, it was hard to top in 1995 and it remains a hugely impressive track car, too.

The new interior included composite seats, with the headrests mounted independently on a roll bar.

The engine had even more power in it, too, which helped Donkervoort to create the D8 Cosworth Sport, with more than 205kW (280hp) giving it staggering performance credentials.
